Why Choose a Porcelain Patio

porcelain-patio-garden-transformation-tunbridge-wells

In recent years, Porcelain has overtaken natural stone as one of the most sought-after patio choices across Tunbridge Wells.

Outdoor porcelain is manufactured to be dense and almost non-porous. This means common staining culprits, such as Water, wine, oil, and barbecue grease, sit on the surface instead of soaking in, so you can wipe them away before they become a permanent feature. It also resists moss and algae, which struggle to penetrate its surface and can be easily washed away.

Unlike natural stone patio options, porcelain comes in one consistent colour, so the patio matches the sample rather than arriving as a lottery of shade variation. It also carries an R11 slip rating, a major added benefit when the surface will regularly be used by children and older relatives.

Finally, you can choose from many styles and colour options, giving you plenty of choice and customisation for how you want your patio to look and feel. It’s a super low-maintenance option, so once laid you’ll only need to maintain it with a couple of washes per year.

Patio Features We Can Build Alongside Your Paving

porcelain-patio-installation-back-garden-terrabase-paving

Many local Tunbridge Wells residents come to us when they need something more than just a standard patio installation. Just some common additional features we can support include:

✅ Steps between garden levels, in matching porcelain or contrasting stone

✅ Paths linking the patio to side gates, sheds and lawns

✅ Built-in bench seating and low seat walls

✅ Water features and pond surrounds

✅ Garden walls in brick, block or rendered finish

✅ Raised beds that frame the paving and hold back sloping ground

✅ Decorative edging, borders and contrasting banding

✅ Retaining walls where the garden drops away

With over a decade of experience, we can incorporate all these features into your project and manage them as one seamless, centrally coordinated project. If any of these additional features are required, you can raise them at the free property survey, and we’ll provide you with a bespoke quotation that covers all aspects of the work.

Our Porcelain Patio Installation Process

Working with Terrabase Paving is super stress-free. Here’s a completely transparent process of what to expect from initial enquiry through to sign-off:

Free Survey

Usually within a day or two of your call. At the visit, we’ll discuss your requirements, check levels and access, and consider drainage.

No-obligation Quote

We then provide a quotation at your property that covers groundwork, materials, and waste removal. We are happy to itemise the quote if required.

Preparation and Installation

We begin with groundwork and then lay the patio within 3-5 working days of starting the project, typically. If bad weather holds us up, we’ll let you know.

Sign-off

Once the installation is finished, we’ll clean the site, remove waste, and walk the patio with you. Payment is due on completion, and the guarantee starts the day we sign off.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, as long as you use outdoor-grade porcelain. Outdoor porcelain slabs are typically around 20mm thick and finished with a textured, R11 slip-rated surface. Their very low water absorption rate also makes them frost-resistant, meaning water cannot get far enough into the slab to freeze and split it.

Outdoor porcelain has a textured surface, and most ranges carry an R11 slip rating. It tends to be less slippery than smooth natural stone as it does a great job of preventing algae from bonding to the surface.

A patio at or near existing ground level in a rear garden is normally permitted development. It changes if the patio is raised: the Planning Portal treats any raised platform over 300mm above ground level as needing permission, which catches a lot of sloping Tunbridge Wells gardens where a level terrace sits well above ground at the low end. Much of the borough also falls within the High Weald National Landscape, and there are twenty-five conservation areas across Tunbridge Wells, including Royal Tunbridge Wells and Southborough, where tighter rules apply. Don’t worry, we flag anything needing local authority consent at the survey so you’re not caught off guard.

We would strongly advise against it. Porcelain needs a compacted sub-base and a full mortar bed, so laying it over and hoping for the best simply isn’t an option. Removing the old patio and building from the sub-base up is the reliable route.

Typically, a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base, then a full wet mortar bed. We work to a minimum 100mm of compacted Type 1, a total excavation depth of around 150mm to 160mm, and a bedding layer of 30mm to 40mm. Soft ground, tree roots, made ground or the heavy Wealden clay found across much of the borough can push that deeper, which is what the survey is for.

Mortar and jointing compound need time to cure before the patio takes traffic or furniture. Curing times vary by product and weather, so we give you the figures for the materials used on your job before we sign off so you know exactly what to expect.

No sealing. Indian sandstone, limestone and other natural stone are porous and benefit from periodic sealing, but porcelain absorbs almost nothing, so there is nothing to seal against. All you need to do is clean the surface with a brush, warm water and a mild detergent, once or twice a year. Avoid acidic cleaners and anything abrasive: neither will mark the porcelain itself, but both attack the jointing compound between the slabs.

No, as long as the base is constructed correctly. A compacted sub-base, full mortar bed, and primed slab back keep a patio stable over time.

You will not damage the slabs. However, it can damage the joints. A narrow nozzle held close will cut jointing compound straight out, and once a joint is open, it becomes susceptible to water damage. Always use a brush and soapy water instead of a jet wash.

Standard 20mm outdoor porcelain is only designed to tolerate foot traffic and won’t hold under the weight of a vehicle. Block paving, resin-bound, or tarmac are the three most suitable options for driveways.

We cannot estimate online because several factors affect price, including size, excavation depth, access, waste volume, drainage requirements, and any finishing work required. We cannot price a patio without seeing the garden, which is why the survey is free and the quote follows it.

No. Nothing up front. Payment is due on completion, once you have seen the finished patio. We accept bank transfer or cash.

Outdoor porcelain options run from pale greys and sand tones to dark charcoal and timber-effect planks. We bring samples to the survey so you can compare them and choose the best option that matches your property’s aesthetic.

Five years on workmanship and materials, on every patio we install. We pass on manufacturer warranties on the slabs. We keep records of the work and provide any relevant certificates on completion.

Yes. Breaking out and removing the existing surface is included, and we take away the waste with a licensed waste removal contractor we bring in.
